Two years ago, I worked with the CEO of a major hospitality company who refused to hire any sales reps who didn’t have prior inside sales experience. I know that in the past two months, over half of his sales hires have never sold so much as Girl Scout Cookies.

This CEO is not alone in having reconsidered his hiring strategy. The Great Resignation has brought employers to their knees. This presents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for candidates to reset their careers. Here are a few ways I’ve seen candidates convince employers to give them a shot at their dream MajhiNaukaris.

Why now?

The Great Resignation is not just an empty buzzword. The share of workers quitting their MajhiNaukaris is 34% higher than a year ago. The current quit rate is the highest ever recorded since the Bureau of Labor Statistics started measuring this economic indicator.

As a recruiter who has worked with hundreds of clients over the years, I’ve never seen a labor shortage hit so many industries and professions at once. Employers are desperate for workers. As a result, I’ve seen employers offer higher salaries, more flexibility, and ever more generous perks. And these employers are still not able to meet their hiring goals. As a result, I’ve seen more hiring managers become willing to reevaluate their conventional hiring criteria.

How can you land your dream MajhiNaukari?

Several candidates I’ve spoken with have used this opportunity to land their dream MajhiNaukaris and switch careers altogether. Here’s what you can learn from these candidates:

1. Prepare meticulously for the interview.

If you can’t rely on your experience to land a MajhiNaukari, you have to ace the interview. As simple as this advice sounds, I see way too many candidates trusting that they can wing it.

Take Jenna, for example. She was one of the candidates with no prior sales experience who landed the MajhiNaukari. When asked why she wanted to work for the company, she was able to articulate what attracted her to (i) the industry, (ii) the day-to-day responsibilities of the role, (iii) the career path, and finally (iv) the company culture. Sometimes, showing a strong passion for a field will help you convince prospective employers that you are worth taking a shot on, even if you don’t have the relevant work experience.

Robert, a young accountant who wanted to switch from finance to marketing, reached out to ask if he should apply for MBA programs to land his dream MajhiNaukari. I asked him what he had to lose on asking his colleagues in the marketing department if he could help them manage their online ads before investing in an MBA. One of his friends in the marketing department gave him a shot at lending a hand with small tasks. And after a while, Robert started managing online ads for family and friends. His quantitative background, coupled with the strong interest he had shown in the field, helped him eventually land a MajhiNaukari at a programmatic advertising agency without needing to spend two years and over $100,000 in an MBA.

4. Go the extra mile.

Finally, if you want to switch careers, recognize that you are asking an employer to take a chance on you. Show them that you are thankful for the opportunity and that you are willing to reciprocate. Ask them what position has been toughest for them to fill or if there are any shifts or roles that other colleagues are avoiding. Volunteer for that dreaded weekend shift or tedious task that no one else wants to do. Show your prospective employer that you are willing to earn your stripes.

The Great Resignation might be the greatest chance you’ll ever get to switch careers. Yes, going through all these steps will be tedious. But fast forward to you enjoying your first breakfast after retiring. Is it more likely that you will regret at least trying to land your dream MajhiNaukari or that you missed a once-in-a-lifetime employees’ market to make a switch?

Biden Had A Good Year Picking Federal Judges. But The MajhiNaukari Could Get Tougher In 2022

President Biden has gotten a group of 40 federal judges confirmed in the Senate this year, the most for a new president since the Reagan era — and he's prioritizing diversity among his nominees for these life-tenured posts.

Biden's nominees include the first openly LGBTQ woman to sit on a federal appeals court, Beth Robinson of Vermont, and the first Muslim American to be a judge, Zahid Quraishi of New Jersey. Biden has also named more Black women to circuit courts than any president, many of them former public defenders.

"Really, President Biden is going above and beyond and setting new, historic trends for what our judiciary can and should look like," said Christopher Kang, chief counsel at the group Demand Justice, which advocates for court reform and progressive-leaning judges.

The effort to identify judge candidates started a year ago, even before Biden took the oath of office. Then-incoming White House Counsel Dana Remus wrote to Democratic senators and urged them to cast a wide net and look beyond the prosecutors and corporate lawyers who populate most of the federal bench.

In a rare interview, Remus told NPR the outreach is starting to reach a wider audience.

"I'm hopeful it's inspiring law students and younger lawyers as well to think ahead," Remus said.

Former President Donald Trump's 226 judges were overwhelmingly white and male. A new analysis concluded that nearly 75% of Biden's picks have been women, and nearly 65% have been people of color, according to Alliance for Justice, a liberal coalition that works on the court and judicial issues.

"The majority of people who come to the doorsteps of criminal courts every day are from communities of color and also communities who don't have access to resources," said April Frazier Camara of the National Legal Aid and Defender Center, which supports legal aid lawyers and public defenders.

Frazier Camara said having judges who have worked with those kinds of clients will make a difference.

"We know that professionals who have experience actually working within the legal systems and working directly with clients and communities are better equipped to understand the impact of the laws in which they enforce from the bench," she said.

The MajhiNaukari could get tougher in the coming year

Frazier Camara says she's pleased with the White House so far but says there's still a long way to go to make the federal bench look more like the rest of the country.

For Biden, the MajhiNaukari could get tougher in the coming year. Most of his judicial nominees so far have come from states with two Democratic senators, who won't block his choices for the courts.

"Obviously the Biden administration has first focused on the low-hanging fruit ... And to get the other nominees through it would require a compromise process and it just remains to be seen whether that's something can be achieved," said Carrie Severino, who runs the conservative-leaning Judicial Crisis Network.

The White House's Remus said the president will try to leverage his long relationships in the Senate.

"And we will continue working in good faith with all senators to fill our vacancies," Remus added.

But it's not clear whether Republicans will see things the same way, especially in a Senate that's evenly divided.

There's yet another unknown for the year ahead: whether Biden could have an opening to fill on the Supreme Court.

Severino, of the Judicial Crisis Network, said conservatives are on alert.

"You never know when a judicial vacancy is going to arise and so we always are prepared for the next big fight," Severino said.

In 2022, Security Will Be Linux And Open-source Developers MajhiNaukari Number One

Linux is everywhere. It's what all the clouds, even Microsoft Azure, run. It's what makes all 500 of the Top 500 supercomputers work. Heck, even desktop Linux is growing if you can believe Pornhub, which claims Linux users grew by 28%, while Windows users declined by 3%.

Open-source software is also growing by leaps and bounds. According to Gartner's 2021 Hype Cycle for Open-Source Software (OSS): "Through 2025, more than 70% of enterprises will increase their IT spending on OSS, compared with their current IT spending. Plus, by 2025, software as a service (SaaS) will become the preferred consumption model for OSS due to its ability to deliver better operational simplicity, security, and scalability."

Thinking of databases, the beef and potatoes of enterprise software, Gartner predicts that over 70% of new in-house applications will be developed on an open-source database. Simultaneously, 50% of existing proprietary relational database instances will have been converted or are being converted to open-source DBMSs.

I'll buy those numbers. I've been following Linux and open-source software since day one. Everywhere I go and everyone I talk to acknowledges that the pair run the software universe.

But with great power also comes great responsibility as Spider-Man knows. And, as many developers recently found out when multiple security vulnerabilities with the Apache Java logging open-source library log4j2 were discovered, also comes great headaches.

The log4j2 problems are as bad as bad can get. By the National Vulnerability Database (NVD) scale, it's rated as 10.0 CVSSv3 which is perfectly awful.

Its real trouble isn't so much with open-source itself. There's nothing magical about open-source methodology and security. Security mistakes can still enter the code. Linus's law is that given enough eyeballs, all bugs are shallow. But, if not enough developers are looking, security vulnerabilities will still go unnoticed. As what I'm now calling Schneier's law, "Security is a process, not a product," points out constant vigilance is needed to secure all software.

That said, the real pain-in-the-rump with log4j is with how Java hides what libraries its source code and binaries use in numerous Java Archive (JAR) variations. The result? You may be using a vulnerable version of log4j and not know until it's been exploited.

As Josh Bressers, Anchore's vice president of security recently explained, "One of the challenges the log4j vulnerability poses is actually finding it. Java applications and dependencies are usually in some sort of packaging format that makes the distribution and running really easy, but it can make figuring out what's inside of those software packages difficult."

Fortunately, there are log4j scanners that can help you spot defective log4j libraries in use. But, they're not perfect.

Behind the log4j mess is another problem, That's "How do you know what open-source components your software is using?" For example, log4j2 has been in use since 2014. You can't expect anyone to remember if they used that first version in some program you're still using today.

The answer is one that the open-source community started taking seriously in recent years: The creation of Software Bills of Material (SBOM). An SBOM spells out exactly what software libraries, routines, and other code has been used in any program. Armed with this, you can examine what component versions are used in your program.

As David A. Wheeler, the Linux Foundation's Director of Open Source Supply Chain Security has explained, by using SBOMs and verified reproducible builds, you can make sure you know what's what in your programs. That way, if a security hole is found in a component, you can simply patch it rather than a search like a maniac for any possible problem code before being able to fix it.

"A reproducible build," by the way explains Wheeler, is one "that always produces the same outputs given the same inputs so that the build results can be verified. A verified reproducible build is a process where independent organizations produce a build from source code and verify that the built results come from the claimed source code."

To do this, you and your developers need to track your programs in an SBOM using the Linux Foundation's Software Package Data Exchange (SPDX) format. Then, to further safeguard that your code is really what it claims to be you need to notarize and verify your SBOM with services such as the Codenotary Community Attestation Service and Tidelift Catalogs.

All this is easy to say. Doing it hard. In 2022, pretty much all open-source developers are going to be spending a lot of time checking their code for problems and then building SPDX-based BOMs. Users, worried over Solarwind type disasters and log4j security problems, will be demanding this.

At the same time, Linux developers are working on further securing the operating system by making Rust Linux's second language. Why? Because, unlike C, Linux's primary language, Rust is much more secure. Specifically, Rust is much safer than C at handling memory errors.

As Ryan Levick, a Microsoft principal cloud developer advocate, explained, "Rust is completely memory safe." That's a huge deal, since, as Linux kernel developers Alex Gaynor and Geoffrey Thomas pointed out at the 2019 Linux Security Summit, almost two-thirds of Linux kernel security holes come from memory safety issues. And where do those come from? Inherent problems with C and C++.

Now Linux is going to be rewritten in Rust. At least not this decade, check with me again in the 2030s, but a lot of Linux drivers and other code will be written going forward in Rust.

As Linus Torvalds told me while he's "in no way 'pushing' for Rust," he's "open to it considering the promised advantages and avoiding some safety pitfalls. Still, he concluded, "I also know that sometimes promises don't pan out."

We'll see how it all works out. No matter how the specifics go, one thing I know for certain. We're going to see securing code become the top issue for Linux and open-source developers in 2022. They've both become too important for it to go any other way.
